Heritage listING - current status
The current status of the buildings and precincts under the 2012 heritage list is being documented by Urban Centre Mumbai. This section comprises the history of the listing process and timeline with documents. The 2012 listing has been split into six tasks (as per the 2005 listing) for ease of navigation.
Mumbai’s heritage listing process began in 1995 with the original list comprising 633 structures and precincts under Development Control Regulation 67, primarily covering the Island City. In 2005, a revised draft list proposed substantial additions across the suburbs, prepared by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Heritage Conservation Society (MMR-HCS), with total 1,065 structures and precincts.
On 31st July 2012, the BMC (then MCGM) issued a formal notification that included two key actions:
(i) Modifications to the existing 1995 list (Tasks I and II), and
(ii) Inclusion of additional heritage structures, sites, and precincts from the City, Western Suburbs, and Eastern Suburbs (Tasks III to VI)
The 2012 list, now officially notified, represents the most comprehensive and updated record of Mumbai’s built heritage with 1,510 structures and precincts.
