Three decades of
Mumbai's Heritage Regulations
"What posterity would not willingly let die"
The Mumbai Heritage Project, is an initiative of Urban Centre Mumbai, in an attempt to capture in detail the 30 years of heritage regulations and listings in Mumbai and the MMR, and ensure that the city does not lose this rich data and .
The aim of the project is to create a digital and physical archive of all milestones and documents in the heritage process, process of the MHCC, original and additional heritage listings and an update on the current status of the same. We have achieved this by a detailed research of physical and online documents in the public domain from various authorities, creating a timeline of the 30 years of heritage regulations (1995-2025) and documenting current status.
CURRENT STATUS OF THE HERITAGE BUILDINGS

ISLAND CITY
Extends from Ward A to Ward G, reflecting Mumbai's colonial-era core with significant heritage precincts and dense historic urban fabric.

EASTERN SUBURBS
Spans from Ward M East to Ward N, characterized by post-independence development and zones with industrial and cultural heritage significance.

WESTERN SUBURBS
Ranges from Ward H East to Ward R South, blending residential growth with preserved elements of Mumbai’s suburban heritage.
In 1995, an initial list of heritage buildings and precincts was published, followed by an additional listing in 2005. These two lists were later reviewed and consolidated by the BMC in 2012 into a single updated heritage list comprising some 1,500 buildings and precincts.
Urban Centre Mumbai is in the process of documenting the current status of all heritage buildings and precincts, as of 2025, and the same is being uploaded on this public website. We also have provided an option for public input on any one of the buildings or precincts to provide any historic photographs, personal anecdotes or relevant information to create a complete story for each building. Once reviewed, this information will be put up on the website with due credits.
